IMDA Cross-Cultural Challenge 2018
As part of its programing for St. Patrick's Day 2018, the IMDA would like to include a cross-cultural component in its festivities at Landmark Center on March 17 and 18. Immigration and diversity are topics that have been receiving an increasing amount of attention recently, not all of which has been positive or progressive. From the middle of the 19th century to the early 20th century, Irish immigrants frequently encountered prejudice and discrimination as they attempted to adapt to American culture and society. Now, all too often, their ancestors are seeing other races and ethnicities being treated in a similarly inhospitable manner.
The IMDA believes that exposure to the music, dance and customs of ethnic groups other than one’s own can help bridge gaps, foster understanding and promote mutual respect. To that end, the IMDA is hereby challenging Irish and non-Irish organizations alike to seek out and collaborate with one another in order to create a “performance piece” that can be presented on the Main Stage and/or in the Weyerhaeuser Auditorium at the Landmark Center on March 17 and/or March 18.
Details on the attached program description. Please note that the deadline for applications is January 15, 2018. Questions about proposal requirements should be sent to email@example.com.
Become a Member of the Irish Music and Dance Association!
It's time to renew your membership in IMDA.
In the past, people have often become “paying” IMDA members ($20 for individuals, $25 for families and organizations) simply to indicate their support for the IMDA’s programs and activities, including the annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and Day of Irish Dance at the Landmark Center, the IMDA Workshop Tent at the Irish Fair of Minnesota, the “IMDA Honors” series, the IMDA Educational Grant Program, the “Decade of Dance” awards.
While that will still be the primary motivation for many, all of our new and renewed 2017 members will also receive the following: * A one-year (January to December 2017) subscription to the IMDA’s monthly email newsletter, which features (among many other things) Amy Shaw’s “Tune of the Month,” Will Kenny’s always-fascinating articles about theIrish language, Sherry Ladig’s book reviews, Brian’s Miller’s “Northwoods Songs” series, and a comprehensive list of local Irish music performances and cultural events in the newsletter’s “Community Calendar” section. * A “Proud Member of the Irish Music and Dance Association” 3” x 10” bumper sticker or 4” x 4” decal. * “Priority listing” in our popular on-line Community Resources Directory, which is frequently used by people who are seeking local Irish musicians, bands, dancers and entertainers for performances, ethnic festivals, wedding receptions, corporate events, etc. * Public recognition in a “New or Renewed Members” section of future IMDA newsletters and in related posts to the IMDA web site and Facebook page.
